To check a tourist registration number in Catalonia, look it up in the Generalitat’s official list. It is free and needs no account. Type the number exactly as it is, hyphen included, for example HUTB-123456. If it shows up marked «Alta» (active), the home is registered. If it does not show up, something is wrong.
This guide is for the owner checking their own number, the manager taking on a new flat and the traveller who doubts a listing. It shows where to search, how to read the number and what to do if it is missing.
Where to check a tourist registration number in Catalonia
The Generalitat, Catalonia’s regional government, publishes a list of every registered tourist accommodation. It is called «Establiments d’allotjament turístic inscrits al Registre de Turisme de Catalunya» and it is in Catalan. It covers hotels, campsites, rural houses and holiday homes, which Catalonia calls HUT (habitatge d’ús turístic, home for tourist use).
Follow these steps:
- Open the official Catalan Tourism Register list, on the «Dades» (data) tab.
- Click the «Cerca a» (search) box at the top right.
- Type the full number: letters, hyphen and six digits. Press Enter.
- If it exists, you will see a single row. If not, the counter reads «0 a 0 de 0».
- Scroll the row to the right and compare the street, number and town with the listing.

We tested it on 16 October 2026. Capital letters do not matter: «hutg-» and «HUTG-» find the same thing. The hyphen does matter: «HUTG000121» without it returns nothing, even when the number exists. Many listings copy the number without the hyphen, so add it before you search.
How to read a HUT number: HUTB, HUTG, HUTL, HUTT and the rest
A Catalan holiday home number has three parts. First, HUT. Then one or two letters for the area. Last, a hyphen and six digits.
The area letters are not always the province. They name the regional tourism office that handles the file. That is why there are seven prefixes, not four:
| Prefix | Area | Active homes |
|---|---|---|
| HUTB | Barcelona | 22,762 |
| HUTG | Girona | 45,242 |
| HUTT | Tarragona | 25,013 |
| HUTTE | Terres de l’Ebre (south of Tarragona) | 5,666 |
| HUTL | Lleida | 2,727 |
| HUTVA | Val d’Aran | 1,707 |
| HUTCC | Catalunya Central (central counties) | 1,385 |
That is 104,502 homes in all, according to the list updated on 5 October 2026. A number that does not follow this pattern (other letters, five digits, no «HUT») is not a Catalan holiday home number.
Other kinds of accommodation use other letters: H for hotels, AT for tourist apartments, PB or PG for rural houses, LL for rooms in a shared home. If you are booking a flat and the listing shows a code starting with H or AT, it is not a HUT. It is a different kind of accommodation.
What the register tells you when you find the number
The row in the list shows:
- The status. Only active («Alta») homes are in the list. Deregistered ones do not appear.
- The address. Street, number, floor, door and postcode.
- The town and county.
- The capacity. How many people the home can sleep.
- The habitability certificate, when it is on file. This document proves the home is fit to live in.
- The check digit. A two-digit number used to pay the Catalan tourist tax to the Agència Tributària de Catalunya. We cover the tax in tourist tax in Spain.
The owner’s name does not appear when the owner is a person. So the register does not tell you who owns the home. It tells you whether that home, at that address, is registered.
That makes the address the check that really counts. A real number copied from another flat passes the search. What it cannot do is match the address in the listing when the register shows a different street.
What to do if the number does not show up

A missing number does not always mean the flat is illegal. Go in this order:
- Check how you typed it. Add the hyphen. Swap a letter O for a zero if needed. Check the area letters: HUTT and HUTTE are different prefixes.
- Search by street. Type only the street name in «Cerca a» and look for the building among the results. If the home shows up with another number, the listing has a mistake.
- Think about timing. The list is refreshed from time to time and can lag behind. The Generalitat warns it may contain errors, omissions and pending paperwork.
- Ask the town hall. In Catalonia, a holiday home is declared to the local council. The council knows whether the file is in progress or closed.
If you are the owner and your number is missing, do not wait for the platform to notice. Ask the town hall for the status of your file. If you have no number yet, the step before this one is the licence: see the tourist licence in Catalonia, requirements and registration.
If you are a traveller and the number is missing, ask the host for the right one. If they do not give it, or it is also missing, tell the platform. A flat with no registration can lose its listing in the middle of your booking. In Barcelona you can report it to the council with its «Avisa’ns» form. More warning signs in illegal holiday rentals.
Which number goes on Airbnb and Booking
In Catalonia, the number that goes on the listing is the HUT number from the Catalan Tourism Register. Catalan tourism law requires it in every advert or promotion. Copy it exactly as it appears in the list, hyphen included.
The steps for each platform are in how to add the registration number on Airbnb and Booking.
HUT is not the NRUA, nor guest registration
Three numbers or duties often get mixed up:
- The HUT is the Catalan number of the home. It is the one this guide checks.
- The NRUA was a national number, from Spain’s Single Rental Register (Registro Único de Arrendamientos). The Supreme Court struck it down in May 2026, as we explain in the NRUA ruling. If your listing shows one, that is fine, but it does not replace the HUT.
- Guest registration (the parte de viajeros) is not a number for the home. It means sending each guest’s details to the police for every stay. In Catalonia it goes to the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police. See guest registration in Spain.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check a tourist licence in Catalonia? Look up its HUT number in the official Catalan Tourism Register list, on the Generalitat’s open data portal. Type it with the hyphen. If it shows «Alta» and the address matches the listing, the home is registered.
What does HUTB mean? HUT stands for «habitatge d’ús turístic», a home for tourist use. The B means the Barcelona tourism office handles the file. HUTG is Girona, HUTL Lleida and HUTT Tarragona. HUTCC, HUTTE and HUTVA also exist.
What if the number does not show up? First check the hyphen and the letters, and search by street too. If it is still missing, ask the town hall, which is where the home was declared. As a traveller, ask the host for the number and tell the platform if it does not match.
Is the HUT the Single Register number? No. The HUT is the Catalan number. Spain’s Single Rental Register was national and gave a different number, the NRUA. The Supreme Court struck down that national register in May 2026. In Catalonia, the number that counts is the HUT.
Details and sources
- Duty to show the number. Article 73.5 of Catalan Law 13/2002 on tourism says the registration number of tourist accommodation in the Catalan Tourism Register «must appear in every kind of advertising, promotion or marketing». Consolidated text on the BOE.
- Official list. Establiments d’allotjament turístic inscrits al Registre de Turisme de Catalunya, Departament d’Empresa i Treball. The Generalitat publishes it for information only and warns of possible errors or omissions. The counts per prefix in this guide were taken from that list on 16 October 2026, with data updated on 5 October 2026. It is the page the Generalitat links from its lists of tourist businesses and establishments.
- Prefixes. The letters after «HUT» match the regional tourism office shown in each row (Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Tarragona, Terres de l’Ebre, Val d’Aran and Catalunya Central). That is why some homes in Barcelona province carry HUTCC.
- Check digit. The list’s documentation describes it as the digit used «to settle the tourist tax with the Agència Tributària de Catalunya».
- Barcelona city. The council’s search works by address. In June 2024 the council announced it will not renew tourist flat licences and wants them to stop operating in November 2028, under Decree-law 3/2023. Until then, an active HUTB number is still valid.
- NRUA. Supreme Court ruling 620/2026, May 2026, which struck down the Single Rental Register created by Real Decreto 1312/2024.
